Waggit’s Tale, by Peter Howe. HarperCollins, 2008.
Looking for a good “dog story” for a child? Waggit’s Tale is a novel about a dog that is abandoned by his owner in a large park, and is welcomed by a local pack of wild dogs that lives in the park. After becoming very attached to the pack of wild dogs, Waggit is captured by the park rangers, and toted off to the “Great Unknown”, a fate that no wild dog in the park has ever survived. A wonderful tale of a dog that must choose between being wild, and thus “free”, and being domesticated, with restrictions. Adults will love this book too.
