Meet Fiona, our miracle girl. Fiona was at the Miami Shelter and was going to be euthanized by 5:00 that day if no one rescued her. We got a call from one of our volunteers asking if EGRR could help. Since Fiona is a mix, we took a Board vote, and everyone decided that we needed to help. The volunteer was going to make the trip to Miami and bring her to our vet in Boca.

That afternoon, we got a call saying that Fiona could not walk at all. Oh no! This made her situation more desperate and difficult, but we had committed to helping her so we had to try. When she arrived, she couldn’t even stand on her own. Our vet immediately put her on Prednisone and an antibiotic. Fiona improved to where she could stand and could manage a wobbly walk. The vet recommended a visit to the Neurologist for an MRI to see what was going on.

The neurologist found a mass in the middle of her spine. He felt it was probably a cancerous tumor, but he didn’t want to do a biopsy because it could do more harm than good. On his advice, we decided to take her off the prednisone and continue the antibiotic. If it were cancer and not an infection, the tumor would grow once we took her off the steroid. She would regress and stop walking.

We did what he said, and……miraculously……Fiona continued to improve! It became obvious that she was getting better, not worse!

We took her down to Dr. Loeser, a rehab vet in Davie, who found she had a very painful bacterial infection of the spine called “spondilitis”. She stayed there about 2 weeks for therapy and got stronger and stronger.

Fiona is now ready to go to her forever home. She is about 40 lbs and loves nothing more than to be petted….she especially loves having her ears “tickled”. She will need a home with no rambunctious dogs or small children in it. She loves people and does well with other dogs, but we can’t take a chance that other dogs will jump on her.

Even though Fiona is not on any special medication at the moment, she is considered a special needs dog, so there will be no adoption fee for her. The therapists down in Davie described her as, “a perfect dog, so sweet and loving”. She’ll make a great companion and friend for the right family…..could that be yours? Please contact EGRR if you’d like to learn more about our precious miracle girl!
