Bison Aug 20

Gender: Male
Age: 2
Status: Needs foster home

Bison is the cutest, sweetest little Golden “wannabe” you’d ever want to meet.  He came to us from Palm Beach County ACC, where he was to be placed in their adoption program, but at the eleventh hour, Bison developed kennel cough.  EGRR was contacted and told that he had a head and body that looked Golden, but there was something else mixed in.  In his kennel picture, he looked all Golden so a volunteer was dispatched to get him - especially since we were told that if we didn’t take him, tomorrow would probably be his last day.

We still don’t know what that something else might be, but it must have been black, because he has streaks of black running through his coat.  Other than that, he looks like a small, skinny young Golden, and he has a Golden temperament.

Bison has been vet checked, updated on vaccines, and is now waiting to recover from the kennel cough that nearly cost him his life.  Until he is recovered, he can only go into a foster or foster-to-adopt home with no other dogs, but once he is better, he can go to any home, as long as there are no children under 9.  That is our rule for shelter dogs.  Since he is only 2, an Obedience Training class is an adoption requirement. If you are interested in meeting this Golden “wannabe”, contact EGRR and ask about Bison.

Jolie Aug 19

Gender: Female
Age: 5
Status: Adoption pending

Meet Jolie, who used to be called Goldie.  EGRR rarely changes a dog’s name, but since we currently have another “Goldie” at Clint Moore, and even have one called “Golden”, we felt another Goldie would be just too confusing.  So this girl is now known as Jolie, and she responds to it already.  We also don’t like to take pictures of dogs who look as messy as she does, but since she will probably be shaved tomorrow to rid her of all those mats, we decided to show her with fur!

Jolie was a stray in south Miami, following Hurricane Wilma.  She was only a puppy at the time, so we all estimate her age to be about 5.  She lived in a home with a German Shepherd who is now 10 years old.  Up until last Labor Day, everyone got along just fine, but then somehow the two dogs got into the garbage left over from the barbeque, and had a huge fight over bones.  After that, Jolie decided that she no long liked her fur sibling, and so she was forced to spend most of her time outside.  That probably accounts for her matted coat, fleas, and ticks.  When it comes to people, she is as sweet as can be - she likes to be petted, and will curl up as close to you as possible.

Just like so many other neglected dogs who come into Rescue, she is very much overweight.  We are waiting for her blood report to come back, to tell us if the cause is over-feeding or a thyroid problem.  Once we have our answer, we will know if diet and/or medication with be the solution.  If you would like to meet Jolie, after she is cleaned up, and if there are no other dogs in you household, contact EGRR.  Jolie deserves to live indoors with a loving family.  Might that family be yours?

Buddy #508 Aug 18
Jane,
Buddy has been a member of our family for 3 years now–I know because we just had some shots renewed that he got from EGRR before we adopted him.
Our vet says he’s fine (needs to lose 4-5 pounds–don’t we all!) but otherwise he’s in fine shape for a 9 year old.  He is a fine dog and turned out to be a great watchdog as well. No one gets close to our house without a challenge from Buddy!  He’s good on trips too!  He loves to ride and doesn’t create a ruckus if we stop somewhere for a night.  he’s a little shy around other dogs but loves our visitors and grandchildren when they come to us or when we visit them.
He seems quite happy with his life now and except for a daily capsule of Rx Glucosamine (CoseqionDS)  for his elbows, he needs no special care beyond brushing and a love. In cool weather, he has become my navigator on errands and local trips. We want to say thank you again for helping us find each other.  Buddy would join us but he is asleep on the cool tile floor and I won’t awaken him.

Thanks again,
 Jim and Carole U.

EGRR Calendar

Since our last two calendars were such a huge success, we are in the process of creating our third annual EGRR Calendar.  Send us your best Golden pictures for consideration. We are looking for everything that shows off our beautiful babies — the cute, the sweet, the silly, the simply beautiful.  (No people in the pictures, and no professional pictures, please.)  The Golden must be an EGRR adopted orphan or owned by either an EGRR or EGRC member.

We’ve gotten a really late start on these, so please hurry and send your submissions to tceller@gmail.com before the September 15th deadline.  A small size file is acceptable for entry, but if your photo is selected, you will be asked to provide a file large enough to print a high qualtiy 8 X 10.

Calendars will be available from Cafe Press well in time for holiday gifts, so be sure to think about how many you will want!

Special Pre-Holiday Offer

With the down-turn in the economy, an evening out with the family has become a luxury that many of us cannot afford on a regular basis, so board games are having resurgence.  Remember all the fun you had playing Monopoly?  EGRR is selling a new version of this classic game - “Golden-Opoly”.

This is a great idea for your early Holiday Shopping or just fun for your own family.  The retail price is $24.95 plus shipping, but the special EGRR price is only $25.00, which includes the shipping.

In addition to Goldens, the following “Dog-Opoly” games available are: Beagle, Boxer, Bulldog, Chihuahua, Lab, German Shepherd, Pug, Dachshund, Shih Tzu, Westie, and Yorkie.

To place your order, contact Marlene Goldman at Mresqgoldens@comcast.net, no later than September 30, 2010, to insure delivery in time for the holidays.

Grooming and Manners Seminar

Our Grooming and Manners Seminar is over and everyone had a wonderful time!  All the participants felt that they learned so much about grooming their Goldens, as well as getting many other tips.  Everyone walked away with goodies, complements of Pawsch, who delivers food to many members of EGRR and EGRC.  There were door prizes and a raffle (with free tickets) too.  We want to thank our friends at Palm Beach County ACC for lending us their classroom, and helping us in so many ways.  The pictures cannot begin to tell the story of what we learned and the fun we had.

Bobby Marley Aug 10

Gender: Male
Age: 5
Status: In foster home

Bobby Marley, formerly known as Buddy, came to us from Broward ACC, where he had been surrendered by his owner, who just didn’t have enough time for him.  (He actually came in with another dog, who was not a Golden, and we know nothing further about that one.  Of course, that gives us a clue that Bobby would enjoy living with another dog).

The fact that they did not have enough time for him certainly shows.  Sweet Bobby, who is about 5 years old, seems to have suffered quite a lot of neglect.  At 92 pounds, he is overweight, like so many dogs we have gotten recently.  He is covered in fleas, but he does not scratch at them.  Maybe he is so used to having fleas that it makes no difference.  Bobby is dirty and smelly with parts of his coat being very thin.  In other areas, his fur is so badly matted it looks like he has dreadlocks, hence the name Bobby Marley.  On the positive side, he is very sweet.  He rode nicely in the car up to Clint Moore and wagged his tail at every opportunity.   He does pull a bit on the leash and does not seem to know any basic commands.  Initial impressions from the vet indicate that Bobby has a slight ear infection, but that his heartbeat is strong.  First thing to do was to get Bobby a bath, then do some blood work to determine what else may be going on. Since he is an over-weight dog with a thin coat, hypothyroidism was a possibility. Bobby is now on Soloxine, an inexpensive pill taken twice a day to aid his underactive thyroid.  This will help in his weight loss and will generally make him feel better. One thing is for certain; the day Bobby came to EGRR was his lucky day because his life is definitely going to be better from now on.  Keep watching this spot - now that Bobby is in a foster home, we should learn a lot more about him, we will be updating his story.

Goldie Jul 25

Gender: Female
Age: 4
Status: In foster home

Back in early July, a member of EGRR came out of her office and found a note on her windshield.  The note stated that the family needed to find a home for their 4 year old Golden Retriever. She called the phone number and was told that they had been given the dog as a puppy, but the children don’t play with her.  They would like Goldie to have a home with a family who will pay attention to her and love her.  They also mentioned that she had allergies that they couldn’t control.  Naturally, our intake coordinator was notified, and Goldie is now an EGRR dog.

Goldie does in fact have horrible skin, but we are not quite sure that allergies are the cause.  She has spent her life living in the yard, exposed to the elements.  That means heat, humidity, rain, bugs, and who knows what else.  According to our vet, all of these can be the cause of her skin condition, and since she is now going to be an inside dog, fixing the condition will become permanent.  Goldie is beginning a course of medicated baths, antibiotics and antifungal drugs, as well as something to control her itches.

This sweet, loving girl is now living the life of Riley.  She is indoors with air-conditioning, and a soft, comfy bed to sleep on.  She is getting lots of attention, and has been spayed.  She is now living in a foster home, where she will prepare to go to her “forever” home.  If you would like to meet this “diamond in the rough”, call EGRR and ask about Goldie.

Denali Jul 21
Denali (f/k/a Andy) is doing wonderfully. We just celebrated his third week with us.  He is so sweet and loving.  He follows us from room to room, always ready to be pet or get a kiss on the top of his head.  Each evening, he stretches out on the couch for a belly rub while we watch tv.  Everyone that meets him falls head over heals in love with him.  He has been just the addition to our family that we were hoping for.
We will send more pictures as his fur grows back.
Thank you for all that you do.

Golden Jul 09

Dear Jen,

We must first of all thank you for your weeks of care and attention to this special guy….

Last night he ate a little of his dinner yet settled onto the”bed” in the living room while we watched TV….

At bedtime, everyone took their place and slept uneventfully til morning.  He’s still checking out every blade of grass and board on the fence; probably intrigued by the scent of the dog next door.  The moist food containing his meds got swallowed first and then only a few bites of kibble.  Understandably, he isn’t much interested in eating right now.  We’ll keep petting and hugging and loving on him while he transitions into his new digs and then we’ll hug and love on him some more ‘cause that’s what we do.

Golden is so easy to have around.  Some dogs …fill a space and add their unique energy.  He slips in, takes a spot, sits back and surveys the situation.  All he sends out is gentleness and love, grateful for any attention and content to be part of the pack….

Thanks again for all the wonderful work done by EGRR and yourself.  Stay in touch with us and feel free to visit anytime.  Maybe we can all meet up some Sunday afternoon at Juno Beach.

Dane & Greg

Sasha Jul 06

Gender: Female
Age: 7
Status: Needs foster home

Foster Home Update: We have discovered that Sasha definitely has a sweet personality, but she want to be the “one and only” both in the house and outside.  She is potty trained ans asks to go out first thing in the morning, with low barks.  She loves to drink her water, but so far does not like the diet food she has been fed, or the food that the other dogs in the house eat.  She does like her green beans though, and she likes to drink lots of water.  She is loves to walk on the leash, and is learning to walk nicely, but she is very strong, and will need an owner who can handle her pulling until she learns to be better on the leash. She has shown interest in the cats and rabbits that live in the house, but she has made no attempts to be aggressive.  She does think that all the toys and all the people in the house belong to her, and she will hop up and greet you with smiling eyes and a grateful smile.  Unfortunately, she has turned out to be too much for this two dog family.

Sasha was surrendered to PBC ACC by the family she had lived with for 7 years.  They were expecting a second child, and felt they could no longer afford to care for her.  When we saw her, we felt that they hadn’t cared for her in a long time!  Sasha’s coat was badly matted, although not bad enough to necessitate shaving.  She had lots of tufts of undercoat showing all over, indicating that what she badly need was a thorough brushing.  And, she tipped the scales at 120 lbs!  The normal weight for a female Golden is 55 to 65 lbs, so her weight equals that of two female Goldens.

Surprisingly, the results of blood tests showed her thryoid to be normal, so we now know her weight is the result of over-eating. Right now, she is in a wonderful foster home, eating the famous “green bean” diet, and starting a serious exercise program.  Her foster mom is also brushing out her tufted undercoat, so soon she will be sleek and svelte.

Sasha is a sweet, loving girl, who just wants to be petted and cuddled.  We have seen some signs, however, that she may need to be an only dog.  Since her foster home has two other dogs, we will know more about this in a few days.  If you are interested in meeting Sasha, and can be committed to keeping her on her weight-loss regimen, contact EGRR.  Since she is a shelter dog, no children under 9, please.
