Expo is Coming!

Saturday, March 27th is the big day!  To get you into the mood, here are a few pictures from last year.  To view the rest, click on pictures.

We are still looking for volunteers to help assemble baskets.  We will be meeting to do this on Saturday, March 20th, at 11 am  at Jane’s house.  For directions, and to RSVP, contact Jane at egrr@bellsouth.net.   We will work until we are done, but will stop for a pizza lunch.  We are also looking for people to take pictures of the event.  And most of all, we are looking for you to be there with your Golden(s). 

We have lots of exciting things planned  this year.  In addition to our Parade of Rescue, Rainbow Bridge Ceremony, and fabulous raffle table, we will be having a special tennis ball raffle, for a chance to win a 3 day, 2 night stay at the Doubletree Hotel in Key West, with passes to the major attractions.  Write your name on a tennis ball, and throw it into the xpen.  A dog will select the winning tennis ball. We will also have a new demo this year — tracking.  if you find it interesting, you will be given the opportunity to try it with your dog.  Of course we will also have our ever popular agility and field demos. 

Our friends from EGRC will be there grooming dogs for donations.  In order to have your dog groomed, the dog must be freshly bathed and free of mats.  Owners will be required to sign a release.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 27th at Tradewinds Park, Appaloosa Shelter.  Remember, the event runs from 11 am to 4 pm. and the Rescue Parade will begin promptly at 1 pm.

Scotch, short for Butterscotch, will turn 7 on March 24^th, and she told us she would like to celebrate her birthday with her “forever” family.  Her previous family surrendered her to Palm Beach County ACC, and we really do not know why.  She is as sweet as sugar, and loves to be cuddled.  If you ignore her, she will jump up for attention.  We are guessing that she did not have a lot of obedience training, and this habit of jumping will require some work. 

Scotch has an interesting story - she was listed on the Shelter website as a male.  When our volunteer picked her up, she assumed that she was taking a little boy to the vet.  Of course, as soon as the vet saw her, we found out that Scotch was a girl.  Examination of her shelter records do show that she is a spayed female, so where the “male” description came from we will never know! 

We are now waiting for Scotch’s blood report to come back, and once we have that, she will be ready for a foster home.  If you would like to meet this sweet and loving girl contact EGRR and ask for her.  Since she is a shelter dog, and we know nothing about her former family, no children under 9 please.

Pancho was found wandering the streets of Kendall.  He looked like he had been a well cared for dog since he had a shiny coat, good teeth, and even his nails were trimmed.  The people who found him did everything to try to find his owners, but to no avail.  Pancho was microchipped but the chip went to a dead end.  The home phone listed had been disconnected, and the owners no longer worked for the company listed as a work number.  This illustrates the need to keep microchip information up-to-date and why EGRR registers the microchips for all our dogs in our name.  We do suspect that the family who lost Pancho may not have been his original owners, since he does not respond to this name.  Since we have no way of knowing what he would respond to, we are keeping this name for the time being.

Pancho is a lovely 7½ year old boy; he actually turned 7 in September, information gleaned from his microchip registration. The vet who examined him thought he was much younger since he looks so good, and is active and playful.  This is the main reason why the folks who found him couldn’t keep him - they have a 13 year old Golden, and he was just too energetic for her.   He appears to be housebroken, and knows his basic commands but in Spanish.  Say “sientate” and he immediately sits! He does seem to understand English and can certainly learn all his commands in no time. 

Once his blood report comes back (and we don’t anticipate any problems) he will be neutered and ready for a foster home.  If you are interested in meeting this delightful boy, please contact EGRR and ask for Pancho.  Since he was a stray, no children under 9 please.

Meet Bailey, the almost perfect Golden Retriever!  He is just what you imagine when you think of a Golden - sweet and loving, with beautiful soft Golden fur.  He gets along with everyone and that includes other dogs, cats, and kids.  He is completely housebroken, obedience trained, and walks nicely on a leash. Bailey was very well cared for by his family, and came to us totally up-to-date on his vaccines, having had them all updated just last month. He was also impeccably groomed and had been fed a very high quality dog food, since they adopted him about 3 years ago. 

So why you ask, did they give up this wonderful dog, and what does the “almost perfect” mean?  The answer is that Bailey is terrified of thunder and can become destructive, if left alone during a storm.  (He doesn’t like fireworks either, but that situation is very controllable.)  When his family went on vacation, he was boarded in a home situation, where there were other dogs, and he did not have a problem.   Since Bailey’s family had to leave him to go to work, and he was an only dog, he was frequently alone during thunderstorms.  Before surrendering Bailey, they considered getting another dog, but realized that their home just could not accommodate one.  His family did try medical means of controlling his fears, but they caused him other problems, so they had to stop. 

We are looking for a special home for Bailey - a home where there is at least one other dog, and where the humans are around frequently.  A retired individual or couple, or a stay-at-home mom would be ideal.  We will gladly work with this new family on natural alternatives to help calm him during a storm, and will explain which medications cannot be used.  If you meet these qualifications and are interested in meeting Bailey, please contact EGRR.

Foster Home Update: Rocky is clearly housebroken.  They put the crate together and have not had to use it.  He has been left alone for several periods of time and does just fine.  He sits on command most of the time, and even downs as well…. He is a very smart lovable guy and is calming down.

Back in December, we received a phone call from Rocky’s owner.  He was getting divorced and had moved to a small home, where he was permitted to have only one large dog.  Since he had two, Rocky and a 7 year old Golden, he had to give up one and felt that the puppy would be easier to re-home.  Time passed and because of his work schedule, we were never able to coordinate a meeting for Rocky to become an EGRR dog.  Finally, just a few days ago, there was a solution - the owner’s sister agreed to bring Rocky to us. 

Rocky is a typical young male Golden - sweet, energetic, but all puppy!  He never really lived full-time in a house - in his first home he spent most of the day, while his owner was at work, in an air-conditioned garage; then when they moved, he spent about 8 hrs a day in the yard.  Although his owner tried to obedience train him, he did not have the time to follow-up on what was learned in school, so they finally dropped out of class. At this point, Rocky is an over-grown puppy, who needs to learn the skills of living in a home.  He is not housebroken, and does not walk on a leash.  This is a dog who will need to be crated until he learns his house manners, and of course obedience training is a requirement for his adoption.  We know that Rocky lived with a 4 year old child, but we feel he would do better in a home with slightly older children.  If you are interested in meeting this big, beautiful baby, and are prepared to turn him into the wonderful Golden we know he can be, contact EGRR and ask about Rocky.

Prince, now known as Logan, is doing fantastic.  He’s met several dogs in the neighborhood who we meet on our walks, and he’s gotten along with all of them, male and female alike.  He is such a sweet boy and has a great disposition.

He seems to be settling in and more comfortable here with each passing day.  Maybe once he’s been here 2 weeks he will realize this is his HOME now!  He and Cali are getting along fine.  As a matter of fact, she was lying in the hall the other night, I was already in bed watching TV, lights off, and he was on his bed asleep.  She was asleep & started dreaming and making a whimpering noise really loud, and it woke him up, and he got up off the bed and walked into the hall to see what was the matter with her.  I thought that was sweet!  He wanted to make sure she was ok.  They are also really protective and go to the window and bark if they see other dogs, etc. go by.  They’re both great watch dogs!

I do plan to attend the expo.  I will definitely line someone up to help me with the two of them.  It will be a fun time for sure.
