Classes Jan 15

Rally Class

Due to the extreme cold, the Rally Class did not begin until Thurs., Jan. 14th with an orientation. It is not too late to sign up and come to a class.  The second class will be on Tues, Jan. 26th, and classes will meet regularly on Tues. night, after that.
Does your dog know basic obedience commands or has he/she earned a CGC?  If so, Rally is the next logical step.  EGRC, our sister organization, will be holding Rally Classes, starting with the basics, beginning on Tuesday, January 5th. The classes will be held at Loggers Run Park, in Boca Raton, where we held our CGC Class.  The class will be limited to 12 students, and 8 people have already registered, so if you are interested, you need to move quickly.  The cost will be $55 for 6 classes, which will be held either 2 per week, for a 3 week period, or 1 class per week, for 6 weeks.  The participants will vote on this during the first night of class. Rally is a lot of fun!  To learn more about this fun sport, click on Rally Info.  To register for the class, contact Michele Panetta at croscrk@gmail.com

Obedience Classes

Looking for a Basic Obedience Class?  Look no further.  EGRC, our sister organization, is running a basic obedience class on Tuesday nights at 8 pm in Loggers Run Park, in Boca Raton.  Orientation (no dogs) will be held on January 19th.  The instructor is Barbie Keough, a very experienced instructor, who has put many obedience titles on her dogs, including her rescue Golden, Jake.  To register, you can contact Michele Panetta at croscrk@gmail.com or just show up.  Before you know it, you dog will be doing what you see in this picture, although not while you are taking this class!

Murphy Jan 08

Hi Marlene,

Murphy and I wish you and everyone at EGRR a Happy New Year! Murphy has been quite busy this year. We moved back into my home in east Delray Beach since my father passed away. He loves being at his new home considering he has lots of new friends here in the community. His best friends are Ellis, the Weimaraner and Buckley, the Great Dane who lives next door.

Last spring, his brother Astor, an 18 year old rescue kitty was allegedly attacked by a neighbor’s Chow and disappeared for almost 6 weeks. Thanks to Murphy and a neighbor’s Jack Russell, Bill, they found him 100 yards from the house. Astor had lost half of his body weight and had days left to live. Murphy was by his side throughout his recovery and keeps a close watch on him now! What a hero!

A few months ago we took a wonderful trip down to the keys and he swam and swam and swam! He also made friends at the restaurant next to our hotel (The Lookout Lodge…dog friendly), Mile Marker 88, where he enjoyed Doggy ice cream and biscuits. He loved it!

Murphy spent a wonderful 2nd Christmas with us and he is the love of our lives. We couldn’t be luckier!

All the best!
Kind regards,
Stephanie W

Changes to Fees in 2010 Jan 01

With more and more people being hard hit by the economy, the family dog often becomes the last one to receive necessary medical care, or in some cases, any care at all.  These dogs are ultimately surrendered to rescue.  In the past year, EGRR has accepted dogs requiring expensive medical care, including surgeries and heartworm treatment.  We never say no to a dog for any reason other than aggression, so we take the sick and elderly, treat them and prepare them for their new homes.  Often, this requires a long stay at the vet’s office, in addition to the medical care.  Unfortunately, this costs money, so we are finding it necessary to impose an adoption application fee of $10, and to increase all our adoption fees, as of January 1st, to help us meet our expenses.   Please click on FAQ to view our new adoption fee schedule, and remember that the adoption fee is the very least you will ever spend on your dog.

Floyd Jan 01

 Dear Jane,

It is exactly one year since we adopted Mr. Floyd…  he’s a real gem and we truly thank you for everything you do each day for all the Floyd’s of South Florida.  That was a wonderful video, thank you for sharing it with me.  Definitely a tear jerker. [To see this video, click here]

I feel the same way, wondering if Floyd would ever wag his tail… now he does and he’s a happy, sweet boy.  We are lucky to have him as part of our family.  Have a wonderful day and better 2010!

Warm regards… MB

Noel Goes Home Dec 24

It was the week before Christmas, when we received an emergency phone call about a young Golden stray in Miami and immediately sent a volunteer to pick him up.  As soon as our volunteer saw Noel, he knew that he was not a Golden, but because it was almost Christmas, he just couldn’t bear the thought of this boy possibly ending up in a shelter, so he brought him north to Clint Moore.  Of course, by now you know how he got his new name!  We put out calls to all the Lab rescue groups in the area, but got no reponses, so we assumed responsiblity for this beautiful boy.

Our Intake Coordinator regularly checks the Lost & Found ads in the local newspaper, looking for found Goldens, with the idea that if the owners don’t show up, EGRR can rescue these dogs. This time, instead of a found Golden ad, she saw a lost Lab ad!  Lo and behold, a phone call revealed that this was Noel’s family.  He had gotten out of the yard when the gardener left the gate open.  Since it was Sunday night, they had to wait until the next day to get their boy home.  Here he is with his “mom” who generously gave us a donation for returning her “Scout”.  What a wonderful Christmas present for Scout and his family!

Fluffy Now Known As Kairos Dec 24
Hi there Hermine and Happy Holidays!  I am happy to report that Fluffy (now named Kairos, which is Greek for “Quality Time”) has been living with me in Jupiter for just over 8 months now, and we are doing fantastic!  She is full of life, and full of energy.  She absolutely loves trips to the lake house and to the  beach, goes with me to work sometimes, and has tons of fun with my families Golden Retrievers when we all get together at the lake house.  She also gets along great with my mother’s puppies Mulligan (a 10lb Pomeranian), and Mollie (a 4lb Maltese), and my friends dog Bailey (a 6lb Maltepoo).  Has a fantastic time with another friends dog Tug (a 40lb mutt), and a Golden Retriever in my neighborhood named Cody.  Kairos and Cody LOVE playing tug-of-war, and going swimming together in the pool.

Attached are a few pictures taken on one of our trips to the lake house this past summer.  There is one with Kairos and her new cousins Calypso and Gozo.  This was from the first weekend they met (Kairos is on the right), and they played ALL day.  It was her first time in the lake, and her first time swimming.  It took her about half the day to get comfortable with swimming, but then, she never wanted to get out of the water.  Now every time we go there, she’s the first one in, and the last one out at the end of the day.  She also had her first boat ride this past summer.  She absolutely loved it.  She wasn’t even a bit apprehensive about it.  And once she found out that she could put her face in the wind, she was spend most of the day with her face in the salt air and her tongue hanging out of her mouth.  There is a distinct smile that Kairos has, and when I see it, I know she is both happy and content.  I took a picture of that smile and attached it for you.  I’ll let you be the judge on how happy you think she is.  That photo was taken during a round of Frisbee in the back yard.  Speaking of which, I have over an acre of land that she loves running around.  Plenty of room for those Frisbee games (which she has become quite good at).  She get so excited, sometimes she starts running in anticipation of me throwing the Frisbee.  Many times, she manages to outrun it, and catch it in the air.  She is very strong, and very fast!  She has grown like a miniature pony and tips the scales at a whopping 85 pounds!  Although, she is lean and healthy.  No fat on this doggie!  She gets too much exercise for that.

I mentioned the beach earlier.  She loves going to the beach with me on Sunday mornings.  There are plenty of other dogs for her to play with, and she loves chasing sticks into the water.  But I think her favorite time is when she is playing with other dogs.  I think you might be starting to get the picture that she goes with me to a lot of places.  I have tried to introduce her to as many dogs (actually, animals) as I can, and she is a great travel buddy.  She rides so well in the car, and goes with me most places.  She gets to see  squirrels, rabbits, and even cows and horses.  She really has a thing for the horses and loves to just sit and stare at them through the fences.  Every time we walk by them, the horses come up to the gate and they just look at each other.

Right now, we are going through obedience training together.  When we were first getting to know each other in April, we worked on the basics like walking on a leash properly, sit, stay, and some basic house manners.  She was a quick study!  Within just a few days, she was great on a leash, and within a few minutes (and a few treats) she had sit and stay down pat.  Although, when we get outside, she can get distracted easily, and likes to run.  That’s why we are now enrolled in a 7 week daily obedience class.  We are learning things like, heeling off leash, sit, lay, stay, come when called at a distance, sit & stay at a distance, and retrieval.  We are also working on house manners like no jumping (not that she does that much), answer the door politely, no stealing food off the table (although this has only happened once), and let people enter and exit doors before she does.  It’s a long class, but we are having fun with it, and so much is learned every day.  Now it’s just practice and repetition.

Did I mention belly rubs?  She LOVES, LOVES, LOVES belly rubs!  It’s the first thing we do when we get up in the mornings.  As soon as the alarm clock goes off during the week, or when it’s “time to get up” on the weekends, she comes and puts her nose on the edge of the bed, and waits for me to get up.  Then it’s time for belly rubs and then breakfast.  When we watch TV at night (yes, she actually watches the TV), she will lay at my feet roll over, and paw at me to get belly rubs.  One thing I haven’t figured out is her reaction when I put on my socks in the morning.  She wants to bite at my feet.  Maybe she just attributes that to me leaving for the day, or maybe it’s something from when she was a puppy.  All in all, she still gets a little nervous when I leave her home alone, but it has gotten better over time.  Also, she has such a great attitude and sweet temperament.  She loves to play with other dogs, and doesn’t even mind if they steal her toys or eat out of her bowl.  She gets along with everyone, and all dogs.  Also, EVERYONE that meets her and spends any time with her comments on what a great girl she is, and how sweet she is.  All in all, we are doing fantastic together, and I am so very thankful to EGRR for being the conduit in finding Fluffy / Kairos, her new forever home!  Feel free to write me any time, and I will be happy to give you updates.  Happy Holidays!

Bosco Dec 11

Hi Stacey, Happy Holidays to you and your family. I hope all is well with all of you. Sorry that I haven’t sent you an update on Bosco in a while. I’m happy to report that he is doing excellent. I have attached a photo of him with my girlfriends dog. As you can see, the are great together. She is a boxer named Salif and is 6 months older than Bosco. They really enjoy each other. Bosco has been very healthy and without any problems other than an ear infection which is normal. He weighed 82 lbs. at his last visit to Dr. Butzer. He is solid and built now. He was absolutely fantastic on a 12 - 13 hour road trip to an hour north of New Orleans for thanksgiving with my girlfriends family. Her parents have 6 acres and both dogs just loved being able to run free like that compared to Florida yards or even the dog beach in Juno. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy your holiday and best wishes for a very Happy New Year. BTW, do you know how his brothers doing? Their birthdays are coming up next month. I can’t believe Bosco will be 3 and I will have him 3 years in March. Time flies by. Roger

Dottie Marie Dec 02
Hi Hermine:

As you know, we moved to GA.  We have a fenced backyard.  Dottie had never been off the leash outside but now she is and she has ghosts chasing her as she runs and runs.  Too funny.

I have taught her “wait, sit, down, lay down, out of the kitchen, leave it and go get daddy”.  She is marvelous and we love her so much.  She and Sally are good pals now.  Dottie does not bother the cats at all anymore since she knows “leave it”.

She weighs about 47 and has a lovely curly coat.  She has beautiful teeth.  She lets me cut her nails and clean her ears and brush her teeth without a problem. She loves to be brushed.  She also is quite the couch girl with Mommy and the blankets.   What a girl - cannot tell you how much we love her.  I forgot to mention that she is a barker.  I can sleep with the window open because I now have a guard dog.  Sally is not a barker.  She is too busy being pretty to bark.

I hope you are well and your hubby too and of course, the girls.  Happy Holidays.

Talk to you soon.
