Forest is a very special puppy, looking for an equally special home. 

He was bred by an experienced breeder, but even under the best of circumstances, things can happen. While still in the uterus, his umbilical cord wrapped around a developing leg, cutting off the blood supply to that limb.  The leg did not completely develop and he was born with a stump.  

According to his breeder, he would have been pick of the litter, the one she would have kept for herself.   She has described him as beautiful, feisty, loving and smart.  Nothing seems to keep him down; he runs and plays joyfully with his littermates. His breeder spends her summers in upstate New York, so last week Forest visited a veterinary specialist at Cornell, where he was deemed to be in great health except for the leg.  The advice was to let him mature a bit more, and to see how he gets along as he continues to grow. His breeder spoke to several vets who confirmed that, since it’s a front leg, amputation is probably not the best choice. Instead, if necessary, a prosthetic would be a good option. They all felt that amputation is not a “given” and that we should wait to see how he does. If present time is any indication, he will do just fine as he is!

Forest is coming to Florida at the end of October, and EGRR is looking for a special family to take Forest into their home as a “foster to adopt” while he grows and matures. The prosthetic can be revisited down the road. Until then, he can be treated just like any other puppy. If he requires any special care, we will let his family know how to provide it.
